When I came across Eats Everything’s music last year, I remember thinking he had put everything I like about music into one. It amazed me how crafty he was and how different his stuff sounded to everything that was out there. Since then I’ve had a bit of an obbsession with him and I must admit… Meeting him at Hideout, I was a little bit starstruck!
Daniel Pearce aka Eats Everything is an incredible DJ and producer from Bristol where house music is literally hot potato right now. Since making his appearance on the scene last year with ‘Entrance Song’ he has blown up the scene with his light hearted playful take on house music. His very likeable personality and energy behind the decks makes him someone you not only want to dance too… But dance with! We chatted to him on Saturday night before he played at Aquarius 1 in Croatia at Hideout Festival and this is what he had to say:
As this is your first time at Hideout festival, is there anyone else your keen to check out, we know you like what Jamie Jones is doing at the moment, might we see you in disguise in the crowd?
Well I’ve got a little rabbit suit that I was going to wear, but I’m probably not going to because it’s a bit warm and it’s quite furry! I wanted to check out Maceo Plex but unfortunately he couldn’t make it. So to be honest Claude Von Stroke is sticking out to me as he’s my favourite DJ and I love watching him. I want to watch Seth Troxler tomorrow because not only is he a really lovely guy, he’s also a wicked DJ but to be honest the line up here is fucking amazing. And I’m gunna put it out there… I wanna watch Skrillex, I’m not a massive fan of the noises he makes but he’s so talented I want to see how he does it coz I’ve heard he’s amazing.
You were on the Dirtybird boat earlier today, did you arrive in style… maybe sail out in a little dinghy like example did last year in Ibiza?
No! I basically arrived on the fucking bus because my lift turned up late and it was cutting it fine whether I was going to make it. I arrived in the opposite style, in squaller! I might as well of been a tramp!
If you would of been offered a rubber dinghy to sail out to join the boat, would you of taken it?
Fucking yes! Definitely. Maybe when I’m a bit more famous next year I’ll sail out in one or maybe I’ll drive my own dinghy!
Haha that would be brilliant… What sort of things do you pull out of the bag when you’re behind the decks… Do you have any wild cards or Pokemon shinys just waiting to blow up the dance floor?
It all depends really because at the moment the music is very deep and I know I’m on a stage where it gets progressively heavier as the night goes on. so I’ve got lots of things… but I never really know what I’m going to play until I start, so tonight will be the same. I just gage the crowd and play a couple of things and if they are not into it I’ll play something else, until I find what they are into then I’ll go that way basically. But I’m sure there will be some little hidden treasures… some little sneaky ones from the back pocket.
Can’t wait! Recently we have seen you and TEED very chatty on twitter, what’s going on there… is there a new bromance and possible collaboration emerging? Totally Enormous has Eaten Everything Dinosaurs….
Definitely! That is 100% on the cards. Orlando is one of the diamonds in the rough in this industry. Not just performance wise but as a guy he’s such a wicked dude. Whenever I know we’re on the same bill or at the same party… I’m like… where’s Orlando! And we’ve got this kind of mutual love for each other because we’re not your normal kind of DJ people, were a couple of idiots basically. We’re definitely going to, it’s no possibility it’s a definite!
Amazing! You seem like a pretty fun guy that doesn’t take the industry to serious, what is your one piece of advice for anyone just starting up as a DJ?
Before you put records out, make sure you’re fucking good! I luckily didn’t suffer from it, although I’ve put alot of shit out before I even knew who I was. The industry is so fucking fickle that if you make a couple of wrong moves you’re tarnished with that for the rest of your career. And you can really be held back by the records you’ve made previously. Soo, 2 pieces of advice actually, don’t put records out before you’re really ready and spend every available penny you have on monitor speakers because when I used to have shitty little monitors and I was fucking going nowhere. I saved and saved and spent 1500 quid on some monitors and the first two records I made after that were ‘Hevvie’ and ‘Entrance Song’ which made me who I am. So it goes to prove that with the right speakers you can hear what you’re making properly so it’s worth spending money on them.
Perfect, And as your name is Eats Everything… What is the weirdest food you have ever eaten?
A cactus. How can I put this… it was in my home town when I was about 16 and I’d done some acid and I ate a few teabags, some coffee then a cactus. It was not good; I don’t recommend eating cooking or preparing cactus in anyway. It was a really furry one as well…
Was it anything like a cucumber?
No it was like a fucking spiky… horrible tasting cactus and I got loads of spikes in my tongue, it was horrendous!
Thanks Eats Everything for talking to us!
